A guide to Danish Wedding Traditions.
Planning a wedding in Denmark? Beyond the quick paperwork and beautiful locations, Danish weddings have fun traditions. These traditions add excitement and laughter to your special day. Here’s a guide to some of Denmark’s most charming wedding customs and ideas on how to include them in your wedding.
At Easy Weddings Denmark, we’ve helped hundreds of couples say “I do” in Denmark. Many couples love the smooth process. But why stop there? By mixing Danish traditions with your own, you can create a wedding that your guests will never forget.
1. The Wedding Kiss Challenge – A Fun Guest Tradition
At Danish weddings, if the groom leaves the room, all the male guests rush to kiss the bride on the cheek. If the bride steps away, the women do the same for the groom!
💡 How to include this in your wedding: Let your guests know about the tradition in advance, so they’re ready to join in. It’s a great way to break the ice and create some funny photo moments!
2. Cutting the Groom’s Tie and Socks
This is a surprise for the groom! His friends will lift him, grab a pair of scissors, and cut off the end of his tie, and the tip of his socks. This tradition dates back to medieval times when people owned only one pair of socks. After the groom got married, the tips of his socks would be cut off. This way, if he ever tried to sleep with another woman, she would see the damaged socks and know he was already married.
💡 Your twist: If you like this idea but want to avoid ruining expensive items, have a spare tie and socks ready for the tradition.
3. The First Dance – ‘Brudevalsen’ (Bridal Waltz)
In Denmark, the first dance is a must. The couple dances while guests form a circle around them, clapping and slowly moving closer. By the end of the song, the couple is surrounded, and the dance finishes with a kiss before midnight.
💡 How to mix it up: If your culture has a traditional wedding dance, you can start with Brudevalsen, then transition into your own country’s dance style. It’s a great way to celebrate both cultures!
4. Toasts, Kisses, and Lots of Glass-Tapping!
Danish weddings have a relaxed approach to speeches but make up for it with plenty of toasts and kisses. Guests can stand up anytime to toast the couple. If someone taps their glass with cutlery, the bride and groom must kiss!
💡 Your twist: If you’d like a more interactive experience, set up a “Toast Station” where guests can write their wishes instead of making long speeches.
5. Feet Stamping & Glass/Plate clinking
During the meal, guests will randomly stamp their feet or clink their cutlery against glass or plates. If the guests stamp their feet, the couple must go under the table and kiss. If they clink their cutlery, the couple has to stand on their chairs and kiss!
💡 Your twist: These playful traditions can add a lot of laughter. Consider incorporating similar traditions from your own culture for even more fun!
6. A Wedding Cake with Kransekage
One of Denmark’s most famous wedding cakes is the kransekage—a tall, ring-shaped cake made of almond paste. Tradition says that the number of rings that stick to the knife when cutting the cake predicts how many children the couple will have!
💡 Your twist: Serve kransekage alongside your traditional wedding cake, or have it as a late-night treat with coffee. If you love fun traditions, play along and see how many rings “stick” to your knife!
7. Late-Night Snacks – A Sweet Surprise for Guests
As the celebration continues, it’s common for Danish weddings to offer late-night snacks. These treats can include everything from traditional pastries to savory bites. It’s a great way to keep the energy up and ensure everyone is fueled for dancing!
💡 Your twist: Think about adding your favorite late-night snacks from your culture or incorporating fun food stations, like a taco bar or dessert table.
